How to be a better teacher.

Note: For beginner teachers

1. Think of a good teacher you have personally had. How was she or he good? How was *she different than the other teachers you’ve encountered? What makes *her so special to you? Has *she made a difference in your life? How so? Can you notice any patterns in the way she taught *her lessons?

2. Reflect upon your lessons, everyday. What did you teach? Did you have a lesson plan? Did you stick to it? Did you have a main objective? Did you accomplish it? Are you satisfied with your day’s lessons? Do you think your student(s) are equally satisfied with their lessons? What went well during the lessons? Why did it go well? What was bad about your lessons? Why was it bad? How can it be improved?

3. You know, an average person has an attention span of (his age + 2) minutes. An 8 year old child, say, would have an attention span of 10 minutes. Just like a 3 year old child would have an attention span of 5 minutes. So divide your lesson into chunks of different activities. The time taken to complete each activity would depend on the age group you are teaching. If you are teaching an 8 year old for example, rotate your activity every 10 minutes. That way, your student would be more alert for each new activity and more absorbent of the lesson taught.
